What is Gender?

“TISSUE” is a project that aims to challenge the mainstream ideology regarding gender. Gender is often considered to be binary in many cultures. However, we believed that the binary category is actually ignoring the enormous complexity of human beings. Therefore, as a group of LGBTQ and supporting allies, we would like to build an art project, challenging the socially constructed gender categories and stigmas through connecting social tissue with biological tissue.

Target Audience

Open minded people coming from all gender & sexuality background, especially people who are interested in expressing themselves and listening to others regarding the gender topics.

Choregraphic soft sculpture

There will be a choreographic soft sculpture (8.5 x 8.5 x 2.2 meter) inside an exhibition room and three interactive recording objects in three other rooms. The choreographic soft sculpture, which looks like a wall of binary separation at first glance, will transform its shape and move around the room slowly, influencing the movement and physical reactions of the audience through its fluidity. The audience can walk freely inside the room, observe the silk screen printed white pattern on the white fabric, and perceive different visual and sensory experiences from different distances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=ifigfDQz5iQ

Interactive recording objects

Three interactive recording objects will be placed at different locations in other exhibition rooms. While interacting with these objects, questions related to gender issue will be presented to the audience. Their answers will be recorded and sent to the exhibition room, where these audio recordings will be manipulated and played as a part of the exhibition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=FfsG-hIKMtw
